I DO NOT UNDERSTAND!

As a child, when my mother said, “NO” to me, I did not understand why so many simple requests from me came with an answer of “NO”.

I remembered mulling over the answer “NO” from my mother. I just did not get it. It made no sense to me. It was completely beyond me, and for a long time, I just couldn’t understand why I couldn’t have my way from some simple request.

Abraham could not understand why God would ask him to sacrifice his son, but he trusted God. Moses could not understand why God kept him in the wilderness for forty years, but he trusted God. Joseph could not understand why his brothers would sell him into slavery, and why Potiphar’s wife would lie on him with imprisonment for punishment, but he trusted God. Mary and Martha could not understand why Jesus would let their beloved brother die, but Jesus told them, “You may not understand; but I tell you if you believe, you will see.”

Sometimes, some things happen and we just don’t understand. Sometimes, it may seem like life just doesn’t make sense. Why does God allow bad things to happen? Why some people live to 100, while others die young? Why do natural disasters happen? Why is it taking God so long to answer our prayers?

As we cry out to God and ask questions, because we do not understand, and we are feeling some kind of a way, and yet, we know that we serve a loving and living God, whose love for us is completely incomprehensible. We are still hopeful and we are comforted, knowing that although we do not understand, God does.

Isaiah 55:8-9 says, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declared the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

God knows and God understands. It may not make sense to us, but it makes perfectly good sense to God. There are somethings that we just don’t have the capacity to fully understand. God may have allowed something to happen, but it doesn’t mean it makes God happy. Life doesn’t make sense at times, but we can go to the ONE who knows all and sees all. When we don’t understand, but we can trust the ONE who understands.

We may feel heart broken. We may even think that God has forgotten us. Please don’t feel that way, because God will never forget about you. God loves you and He cares very much about you. Please do not give up! Please do not stop trusting God! Please do not turn away from God! This is the time to run to Him.

We will never understand God’s ways, and God doesn’t expect us to understand them. Just like, when I was a child, I didn’t understand why my mother would always say “NO”, to me. Just like my son did not understand why I would say “NO”, sometimes to him, on so many occasions. I was only protecting him from himself and that was what my mother was doing for me. As a child of God, we may not understand, we just need to believe that He is working for our good. In due season, we will see the glory of God, in the things that we did not understand.
