LAMP AND LIGHT

Updated: May 3, 2020

Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path.” Psalm 119 is both the longest Psalm and the longest chapter in the Bible. This Psalm has 22 carefully constructed sections and each corresponding to a different letter in the Hebrew alphabet.

Lamps are mentioned in the bible 31 times in 13 books. A lamp is any of various devices that generate light. The bible is like a lamp, a flashlight, because it shows us the way to live. God’s word is a light that illuminates the darkness. It illuminates the path of our lives. It keeps God’s Word shining along the way, then we will not trip or stumble along the way. It keeps us from being easily deceived. If we follow the light, keeping our eyes on the light, when things spring up on us in the dark, and try to trip us up, the light, will reveal our pathway.

A Light is the natural agent that stimulates sight and makes things visible. The word Light is mentioned in the King James Version of the Bible over 272 times. Light is defined as life, as written in John 1:4, “In Him was life; and the life was the light of men.” Those that have faith in Him, Jesus, will have eternal life. This “life” is a gift from Jesus, brought from God, into a dying world. Whoever follows Him will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of the world. In the beginning God said, “Let there be light”, and there was light. He saw that the light was good. Light is always good and positive in Scripture. Lamps and lights have many uses in our daily lives.

The lamp illuminates the way ahead. The Word of God show us where to tread and guides our feet. The Word is like a lamp, it enlightens and inspires us. Our eyes need the illumination, the light (Jesus) and our feet need the direction from the lamp (Bible). A person who uses and practice it (Bible), uses it as his comfort and counselor. Jesus is a light to our path, and He is a lamp by night, a light by day and a delight at all times.

In this life, we walk through a dark forest of evil in a world that has turned its’ back on God. The Bible is our light to show us the way ahead, so we won’t stumble as we walk. We just need to keep our eyes focus on the light. The lamp always shows the brightness of the light.
