Advocacy means getting support from another person to help express your views and wishes, and help you stand up for your rights. Someone who helps you in this way is called your advocate.
An Advocate is someone who can help you speak up, so that your needs are heard, your rights are understood and your problems are resolved.
An Advocate is one who pleads the cause of another; one who pleads the cause of another before a tribunal or judicial court.
The Holy Spirit is our Advocate. The word "advocate" is the same as the word for a lawyer. Like an attorney in court, the Holy Spirit represents us before God. Unlike an attorney in court, the Holy Spirit doesn't stand beside us literally, but He dwells within us, appealing to the Father on our behalf.
Who is He defending us against? Our "accuser," Satan himself! Our accuser, accuses us day and night, before God (Revelation 12:10). Imagine yourself in a courtroom, you are the defendant, the Holy Spirit is your attorney, and the prosecutor is Satan. Satan is really good at his job. Matter-of-fact, he get the Employee of the Year Award, every year.
He will produce evidence against you. What evidence? Your sins! There he stands before the Judge (God) to try to solicit, not just a penalty against us, but the highest penalty there is to give. What penalty? He wants us to have ETERNAL DAMNATION with him and all of his demons. The Holy Spirit defends us to the Judge, but not because of our own merits, that we think we may have. Oh no, because Satan truly have a mountain of evidence against us. He has piles and piles of sin evidence against us.
When the prosecutor rests his case, our great Defender, who is the best defense attorney in the universe, pleads our case. In my mind's eye, I can see Him now, as He stand up to present our case to the Father. The Holy Spirit will call His only witness for the Defense and when the Witness for the defense testifies, the courtroom is amazed and impressed. The Witness for the Defense is no other that our Savior, Jesus Christ. Because of Jesus' sacrifice on the Cross, we have won the mercy of God, the Father. Jesus is God's "Secret Weapon" for our defense, when the "accuser" come against us.
Can you just hear the words of Jesus now, "Abba Father, this is one of your elect. Of course they have sinned and come short of Your glory. But We knew they would sin before they were born. You know all about their past, present, and You know their future. Whatever sins they have committed, when I died upon Calvary's cross, My precious blood covered ALL of their sins. I have displayed My loved toward them and the world, while they were still yet sinners. But when they accepted Me as their personal Savior, they were clothed in My righteousness." Then the Holy Spirit stands and says to the Judge, "On this testimony, Your Honor, I rest my case."
The Judge (God), clearly demand for the case to be dismissed and removed from the docket. Jesus Christ has already paid the penalty for us. We can't be tried for a case that God has dismissed and has removed it from the docket.
"And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before God day and night." (Revelation 12:10)
