What is the biblical definition of servant? "Servant" is a translation of the Greek word douloi, which means being free to act within the bounds of God's will.
Let me ask you a question: How do you see your walk in Christ? Do you consider yourself just a believer, or a disciple, or a servant?
However you see yourself, if you are a follower of Jesus, then you are a Christian. As a Christian, you have tasks order by Jesus. It is easy to fake being a follower of Christ, but real Christians knows that being true to Jesus, requires action and conversion, the engagement of both hands, feet, and heart.
Your work for Christ is a testament of your faith. You should desire to seek God's will in all areas of life. To be a servant of God is a desire, everyday, to honor, obey, and glorify God. Jesus says, "If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me the Father will honor him" (John 12:26).
A servant of God knows that you have to die to the flesh, daily. You seek to love, serve and obey the will of God.
Jesus has given us instructions in the Bible, what He expects of those who profess to know Him and love Him. As we know better, than we are suppose to do better.
What are the characteristics of a Servant of God? Throughout the Bible, there are some distinct characteristics of all the servants of the Lord. There are examples of how we as Christians should serve the Lord.
You will always know a "servant" of God when you see one. Servants of God serves God and do not seek the approval of man. Paul says, "For do I now persuade men, of God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ" (Galatians 1:10). Yes, they care about people, but their motivation is primarily to please God. They are not looking for the accolades of others, but the pleasing of God.
Servants of God have the willingness to serve others. "Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others" (Philippians 2:3-4).
You will know the pretenders. They are the ones who is looking for praise and adoration from man. You don't need a lot of discernment to recognize who they are, you will know the difference between those who wants to be served and those who is serving.
