SLEEP

Updated: Feb 16, 2021

Every creature large and small needs to rest. Just like eating, sleep is necessary for survival.

Sleep gives our body a rest and allows it to prepare for the next day. Its like giving our body a mini-vacation. Sleep also gives our brain a chance to sort things out. Scientists aren’t sure what kinds of organizing our brains does while we sleep, but they think that sleep might be the time when the brain sorts and stores information, replaces chemicals, and solve problems.

The amount of sleep a person needs depends on a lot of things, but most people only need about 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night.

Did you know: 1) Skipping 1 night of sleep will make you cranky and clumsy. 2) After missing 2 nights of sleep, a person will have problems thinking and doing things; our brain and body can’t do its normal tasks nearly as well. 3) After 5 nights without sleep, you will hallucinate. 4) Eventually, it becomes impossible for the brain to give its direction to the rest of the body without sleep. The brain needs to spend time in bed and catch its ZZZs.

There are 72 Bible (KJV) passages about sleep, 9 in Psalms, 8 in Proverbs and 5 in Genesis, mentioned in 26 books.

What does the Bible say about sleep? The Bible never said that sleeping itself is bad. However, it does say a lot about misusing sleep in sinful ways.

Sleeping too much is a common problem mentioned in the Bible. “Love not sleep, lest you come to poverty; open your eyes, and you will have plenty of bread.” (Proverbs 20:13) Scriptures tells us that too much sleep may reflect laziness. My late husband would say, “No work, No eat”.

Sleep can portray the utter and final punishment of a wicked power that has stood in opposition to God. The Prophet Jeremiah foretold the complete destruction of the evil Babylonian regime.

Sometimes spiritual lethargy is represented as a sleep. To the brethren in Rome, Paul wrote “And this knowing the season, that already it is time for you to awake out of sleep; for now is salvation nearer to us than when we first believed” (Romans 13:10).

Sleep can suggest the notion of being unprepared to meet the Lord at the time of his return. Jesus said, “Watch therefore: for you do not know when the lord of the house is coming…lest he come suddenly and find you sleeping” (Mark 13:35-36).

There is someone is never sleeps and doesn’t need any sleep. Praise to God, the one that watches over us, never sleep nor does he slumbers. He watches over us all day and all night. He makes sure that we do not stumble. He never stops protecting us, providing for us, and taking care of us. He never takes His eyes off of us. We all need to sleep, except for God. Thank you Lord for your constant all-seeing eyes. Thank you for watching over us. Now, I can be at rest, while I sleep.
