Just like there is a spiritual awakening, there is also a term called "spiritually dead." When a person is awakening it means that any time you realize or accept something important and life changing, it can be called an awakening, because it's almost like you were asleep before. The definition of awakening is the act of waking. A Spiritual Awakening is a higher consciousness and deeper mental awareness. The process of spiritual awakening brings about personal transformation and a shift in one's worldview.
Being "spiritually dead" is separation from God caused by sin. All people have a sinful side or nature and will commit some type of sin, but when you gave your life to Christ, Jesus saved you from your sins. Those who have faith in Jesus Christ are made spiritually alive. Those that are unbelievers (agnostics, atheists, doubters, heathens, infidels, and skeptics) they cannot please God and they are spiritually dead. They are still dead in their transgressions and sins and the "wrath of God remains on them." The Bible clearly tells us, "They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart" (Ephesians 4:18).
It appears that we live in a cold and cruel world. I know that the perception of the world being cold and cruel can vary depending on each individual's experiences, circumstances, and perspectives. But just looking at the news and reading the newspaper, there are certainly a lot of reporting on cruelty, mistreatment, hardship, and injustice in this world. You very seldom see or hear about kindness, compassion, and loving others. The world as we find it has many levels that are in a chaotic state.
Why do I say that the world appears to be cold and cruel? What I see and hear is that the majority of people are criticizing, killing, harming, complaining, slandering, false accusing and gossiping about others. People are doing and saying things that I just can't bear to see and hear anymore. People are disturbing my peace. Satan is having the best years of his life. Every since God kicked Satan our of heaven along with a third of heaven's angels that followed him, Satan has been the adversary of God and to mankind.
Satan wants to keep the believer from operating in the will of God. He shows up in different forms, such as in your thoughts and sinful desires in our hearts. How many people have been hurt because of what someone has said about them whether it was true or false? Many people have been emotionally destroyed because people pretended that they had their best interest at heart, but they didn't care at all, they was just trying to get what they wanted.
When I look around me, sometimes I see a world that is full of the living dead. Do you know what is so sad, they don't know that they are dead. Paul said, "Once you were under God's curse, doomed forever for your sins. You went along with the crowd and were just like all the others, full of sin, obeying Satan, the mighty prince of the power of the air, who is at work right now in the hearts of those who are against the Lord. All of us used to be just as they are, our lives expressing the evil within us, doing every wicked thing that our passions or our evil thoughts might lead us into" (Ephesians 2:1-3). Paul reminds us that Jesus' followers were once part the the "living dead," but at the time we didn't know that we were dead.
People have an increasing fascination with death, dying, and the dead. It appears that zombies captivates their biggest interests. Zombies are dead frightening creatures that are dead people who have been brought back to life, but without human qualities. Zombies are not able to think and they are often shown as attacking and eating human beings. One of the top rated TV shows is called "The Walking Dead." The Walking Dead is based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman. This gritty drama portrays life in the months and years that follow a zombie apocalypse. A group of survivors travel in search of safety and security, and they are constantly on the move in search of a secure home. But the pressure each day to stay alive sends many in the group to the deepest depths of human cruelty, and they soon discover about the fear of the survivors.
Just for the record, I do not believe that zombies are real. The Bible makes it crystal clear that all of life is only a temporary arrangement. Once we are dead we cannot come back to haunt or eat those that are living. When someone is dead, they are unable to respond to stimuli, they are unable to function at all, because the lack of power and ability. Their body that once was alive is now reduced to an empty shell. Ephesians makes it perfectly clear, "For the living know they will die; but the dead do not know anything, nor have they any longer reward, for their memory is forgotten."
Paul tells us, "But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions - it is by grace you have been saved" (Ephesians 2:4). John said, "So whoever has God's Son has life; whoever does not have his Son, does not have life" (1 John 5:12).
The spiritually dead is the lost and they are the walking dead that are alive in this world. They eat, they move, they love, they live and they seek the pleasures of this world, but they are still dead. The are alive in this world, but they are dead to God. The sad part about it, they choose to be part of the spiritually dead - the walking dead. Some how the spiritually dead does not understand about salvation and how salvation is a free gift from the Lord and He wants so desperately to give it to all that is willing to receive it.
God's Word is meaningless to the spiritually dead, it is foolishness to them. The Bible says, "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God" (1 Corinthians 1:18).
So where will you go after your death, because after a brief life here on earth, you will go to your eternal destiny? God gives every human being the choice to receive His gift of eternal life or to reject it. It is the most significant choice that you will ever make during your lifetime here on earth. "For we must appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil" (2 Corinthians 5:10).
Those that are spiritually dead or the walking dead, has made a choice to reject the God of life and this means that their destiny is predictable and predetermined. Revelations 20:12-15 says, "And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire."
Are you spiritually dead? Are you dead inside? Our living and loving God is so willing and eager to give you life. Jesus is the way and He says, "Unless you are born again, you can never get into the Kingdom of God" (John 3:3). Born again is not about a physical birth but about experiencing a spiritual renewal. It is the process of fully accepting faith in Jesus Christ, His death, and His resurrection. Born again is a spiritual rebirth and it signifies a transformation where someone turns away from their sinful life and accepts Jesus as their Lord and Savior, through repentance, faith and a commitment to follow Jesus. Jesus reminds us, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No ones comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). When you accept Jesus, you are have had a "Spiritual Awakening" and is no longer considered "Spiritually Dead."
