We all have a purpose in life. We have at one time or another aspired to be great. Maybe you aspired to be a famous singer or artist. Maybe you desired for your name to be in lights as a movie star. Maybe you wanted to be a great tennis player or great athlete. Maybe you were reaching to be the Valedictorian in high school or some other educational benchmark. Some people reach their goals in life and some people don’t. Some people can accept their life as it is and some people will wallow in self-pity and bitterness. Whatever your status in life is, it was meant to be what it is. In the words of my mother, “That is the hand that you were dealt, so play your cards wisely.”
You may be very discontented with yourself. You may be very happy with yourself. You may or may not have any special talents or gifts. Maybe mediocrity is the law of your existence. Your days may be remarkable or just the same ho-hum, without any interest, but you do have a purpose.
Take the story of John the Baptist, there is no getting around it. John the Baptist was unique. He wore odd clothes and ate strange food and preached an unusual message to the Judeans who went into the wilderness to see and hear him. He did not aim at uniqueness for his own sake. Instead he aimed at obedience. He knew that he had a specific role to play in this world. That role was to announce the coming of the Savior. Luke tells us that John was in the desert when God’s word of direction came to him. John was ready and waiting. The angel who had announced John’s birth to Zacharias had made it clear that this child was to be a Nazarite, one set apart for God’s service. John remained faithful to that description. “John did no miracle: but all things that John spoke of this man were true," John 10:41. John’s main business was to bear witness to the “Light”. This is our main business, also. We are to be a voice for Christ.
We must be willing to be a voice, and maybe just a voice, to be heard and not seen. Everyone can’t be a Superstar, the title that man gives you. As a child of God, you are a “star”. The small things and the common things, that we do, may not matter to man, but they matter to God. We are doing more good than we know. How? By sowing seeds in Christ and for Christ, and by giving people the true thoughts and words of Christ. In doing this you have played a major role in this life. You would be surprised by the lives that you may have touched. The acts of kindness and the comforting words that were shown to someone’s life, that you touched.
No, you may not be a Superstar, but you are important. You may not understand your purpose or think that you do not know your purpose in this life, or what important role you may play, but you are important.
One day when our life is over, someone may say, “They were a good person, they did no miracles, but they spoke a good word about Christ, and that led me to know Jesus for myself”. At that moment, you became a “Superstar” for Christ.
