SUPPORT BEAMS

Writer's picture: Cecilia PorterCecilia Porter

What is a support beam? It is a beam that supports the weight of the floor joist and other building elements. A joist is a horizontal member that generally runs across a floor and is supported by a beam. Generally, beams support many floor joists and beams have a significantly higher load capacity than floor joists.

The beams are typically installed after the crawl space or basement foundation has been constructed. Once in place, they support the floor above, which generally includes directly supporting the floor joists. If there are additional floors above, their respective loads are passed through the beams at or near the support bearing locations. Why are beams important? Because they support the weight of a building's floors, ceilings and roofs and to move the load to the framework of a vertical load bearing element.

In this life we need some support. What does being a support mean? To be supportive is to give help or assistance, or to hold something or someone up. I have read that there are six types of support: Emotional, Financial, Physical, Social, Practical, and Informational.

Emotional Support is about demonstrating empathy, and understanding, and offering reassurance and encouragement, especially during difficult times. It is showing care and compassion for another person, whether it is verbal or nonverbal.

Financial Support refers to providing monetary assistance to eliminate a financial burden. Financial support helps relieves stress associated with financial insecurities. Financial support refers to the assistance provided to individuals or organizations in the form of funds, loans, grants, or other resources to meet their needs.

Physical Support includes hands-on assistance with activities of daily living, mobility, and other physical needs. For those individuals with physical needs this support is vital. Some examples of showing physical support is by offering physical affection. Holding a loved one's hand while they received some bad news or a distressing telephone call. Driving the person to a medical appointment or helping them with their personal care.

Social Support is the perception that someone is cared for, has assistance available from other people, and that one is part of a supportive social network. The support resources can be emotional (e.g. nurture), informational (e.g. advice), or companionship (e.g. a sense of belonging). Support can come from many sources, such as family, friends, coworkers, pets, neighbors, etc.

Practical Support is normally provided by caregivers. This can include cooking, doing household chores, driving a person to their medical appointments, and helping with personal care. It can include childcare, meal assistance, and much more. Practical support is help with specific tasks and it implies some sort of action.

Informational Support provides people with advice, guidance or useful information that helps them solve problems, generate ideas or make good decisions. Providing guidance on how to solve a problem. Directing someone to a resource that can help them. Giving step by step instructions.

In the Bible there are over 35 verses about the word "beam" from 16 Books. According to Easton's Bible Dictionary the word "beam" in the Authorized Version as the rendering of various Hebrew words. Below are a few examples:

Habakkuk 2:11 - "The stones of the wall will cry out, and the beams of the woodwork will echo it." It means that the stones and beams that was once silent observers of human actions, will eventually speak out and accuse those who have committed evil deeds.

Ezra 6:11 - "Also I have made a decree, that whoever shall alter this word, let a beam be pulled out from his house, and let him be lifted up and fastened thereon; and let his house be made a dunghill for this." This was a severe warning issued by King Darius to enforce his decree about the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem. He declared that if anyone defiled the royal order they would face a brutal punishment by having a beam torn from their own home and then having their house demolished.

Luke 6:41 - "Why do you see the speck of chaff that is in your brother's eye, but don't consider the beam that is in your own eye." We are not to judge other people because we will be judged according to the same standard we use to criticize others. Jesus used the image of a man with a log coming out of his eye trying to help remove a speck of dust in his brother's eye.

Luke 6:42 - "Or how can you tell your brother, 'Brother, let me remove the speck of chaff that is in your eye,' when you yourself don't see the beam that is in your own eye? You hypocrite! First remove the beam from your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck of chaff that is in your brother's eye." The word speck can refer to a tiny splinter or piece of sawdust. The word translated as beam refers to a rafter or a log such as would hold up the roof of a house. When people constantly find faults about other people, they are inviting judgment on themselves, both from those they are finding fault with and from God.

Psalms 104:3 - "He lays the beams of his rooms in the waters. He makes the clouds his chariot. He walks on the wings of the wind." This is a Psalm that is praising God for His creation. All creation is under God's power and control. The writer extols God's creative and sustaining power and invites us to meditate on His greatness.

One thing that we need to always remember is that Jesus is our Support Beam and He is the Light of the world. Jesus as our true light was sent to this world by His Father and He came to bring us back to the Father, because there was so much darkness in this world and so many people refused to acknowledge Him as the true light of the world. Just like a building structure cannot stand without a support beam, we cannot have eternal life without Jesus being our Support Beam.

Colossians 1:13 tells us, "For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves." So we must believe that God is real and this is through His Son Jesus Christ. God sent His Son as the true light and took us out of darkness. We have been rescued from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of His Son whom God loves.

Jesus is the true light and He is our Support Beam. Without Him we can do nothing. "Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, 'I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life" (John 8:12). Here Jesus is saying to us that He is the light of the world and whoever decides to follow Him will have the light of life.

This is the love of Jesus and He really wants us to fellowship with Him. Because of the love He has for us, He does not want us to be in darkness. Darkness is doing what Satan wants us to do. The Bible tells us, "And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness" (2 Corinthians 11:14-15). Please note that the Bible does not say that Satan is an angel of light. No! It says that he masquerades as an angel of light. He makes it look like he is actually standing for good, but instead he is upholding evil because he is the evil-one.

One of Satan's titles is the "Ruler of the Darkness of this world" and it is derived from Ephesians 6:12, which states, "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of the dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."

Satan is the prince of darkness and he is the enemy of God. The love of Jesus is real and so very deep. We have to make the choice whether to choose to believe that Jesus is the true Light or do you choose to not believe in Jesus and therefore remain in darkness. In Deuteronomy 30:19 God said, "This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live."

This is God showing His love towards us that we should choose life so that we can be in His light as we abide in Him. And when you choose life, he says, "You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:14-16).

By faith we are to live as children of the light and help those that are in darkness to come into the true light. As children of the light, we are to speak as God has spoken into any situation into our lives that has come in the form of darkness and because God lives in us, the darkness must always bow to the light of God that we live in. John 1:5 says, "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."

The light of God is shinning in us and through us. The darkness that is in this evil world can never overcome our light to God's glory. And as the light shines in our lives we cannot be in light and in darkness at the same time. Because any form of darkness in our lives does not come from God, but it comes from Satan who lives in darkness. Therefore let us remain in the light by faith understanding that Jesus is always supporting and building us up. That is why He is and always be our Support Beam.
