What does "stillness" means in the Bible? It means to stop being frantic, to let go and let God, and to be still. Being still involves looking for the Lord for help. "My soul, wait thou in silence for God only; For my expectation is from him" (Psalm 62:5).
Stillness is doing absolutely nothing. Doing absolutely nothing is being still. It means letting go of your worries, disappointments, failures, fears, anxieties, hurts, injustices, and unforgiveness. "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10).
Stillness implies that to be still is necessary in order to know God. God is sovereign. God is Omnipotence, Omniscience, and Omnipresence. The three "omni" attributes of God characterizes Him as All-powerful, All-knowing, and everywhere present.
Do you trust God? Be still and allow God to fight your battles. Whatever you are going through, "be still," wait, and trust God, by simply believing that He has everything under control, because you can't control anything.
Stillness means being patient. There are many instances in the Bible where God advices people to be patient. There are many times God told His people to stand still and wait for Him to act on their behalf. Were they successful in their obedience? Absolutely, yes!
Waiting is so very hard to do! Sometimes while waiting, the answer maybe no, or not now, or there appear, at times, no answer at all. But take a deep breath, because time, believe it or not, is your friend. Sometimes it may appear that our biggest enemy is patience. Patience is not your enemy, patience is a virtue. Virtue meaning, the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23)
When we ask God for help, we are often looking for a big answer, like a shout, to point us in the right direction. "After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper" (1 Kings 19:12). When things seems out of control, God will not shout, but often we will hear Him in a still small voice. This requires a calmness in waiting and the ability to listen for God's voice. Stillness and noise cannot coexist. While being still and quiet, only then can you hear the voice of the Lord.
The Power of Stillness is patience. While waiting and listening for God, you are waiting for whatever answer that God will give you. Remember, Joseph spent many years waiting on God, while waiting he worked very hard, including learning household management and people management skills (while as a slave and in prison) that was ultimately what he needed when he became the number two person in Egypt.
The Power of Stillness, boils down to trusting in God's timing, rather than giving in to our human REASONING and impatience. God is in control and He knows what we need and what we desire. God wants the absolute best for us and He knows what IS best for us.
The Power of Stillness, means to surrender. Surrender what? Surrender control! Yield what you think you understand about your situation and circumstance to God's understanding. Remember, God is All-knowing and He knows everything, especially about us. Our view of the situation is very cloudy. We have very limited vision and we can only see through a limited and tiny view. We are human and we have limitations, we have no idea nor can we comprehend that there is a much larger and clearer view, God's view.
The Power of Stillness, is resting in God. When your heart is at rest in God, it means that you are trusting God. God has your best interest at heart. He has a wonderful plan and purpose for you. "Be still and know that I am God," says Psalm 46:10. When resting in God, you are allowing God to penetrate your heart and mind. God's voice is the loudest when your voice is the quietest.
When you surrender your will to God's will, you will receive strength. When you are at rest in God, you will receive the peace to be still, when He tells you to be still. This will help you to live your best life. Now this is the Power of Stillness!
