On a clear night, the sky offers a magnificent display of fascinating things to see. We see the stars, constellations, and bright planets, the moon, and sometimes meteor showers.
Sometimes you can observe the night sky without any special equipment, but a telescope will enhance the experience.
What are stars? Stars are giant spheres of superhot gas made up mostly of hydrogen and helium. Stars get so hot by burning hydrogen into helium in a process called nuclear fusion. This is what makes them so hot and bright. Our Sun is a star.
There are many different types of stars. Stars that are in their main sequence (normal stars) are categorized by their color. The smallest stars are red and don't give off much of a glow. Medium size stars are yellow, like the Sun. The largest stars are blue and are hugely bright. The larger the main sequence star, the hotter and brighter they are.
I have always had a fascination with stars ever since I was a little girl. I love looking up at the night's sky to see all those shining stars. They are so beautiful! It just amazes me to see the beauty in something surrounded by darkness.
The stars are referred to more than fifty times in the Bible. Job pondered how God made Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades and the chambers of the south. "Which maketh Arcturus, Orion, Pleiades, and the chambers of the south. Which doeth great things past finding out; yea, and wonders without number" (Job 9:9).
The Lord who made the stars can do what no man can ever do and that is to name them and count them. "Lift up your eyes on high: Who created all these? He leads forth the starry host by number; He calls each one by name. Because of His great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing" (Isaiah 40:26).
As a child of God, we are like stars in the night's sky. "...You will shine like stars in the sky" (Philippians 2:15). Just like those beautiful stars that sparkles in the night sky, we should shine in a world filled by darkened sin. God created us to let our light shine in the darkness. There is so much darkness around us. There is so much darkness in this troubled world.
God wants us to be a beacon of light in a dark world, pointing others to Him. "In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven" (Matthew 5:16).
Remember the lyrics to a beloved hymn called, "This Little Light of Mine?"
This little light of mine,
I'm gonna let it shine.
This song has a powerful meaning of the love and truth of Jesus Christ.
You are the light of the world. You should always let your light shine. That light that is within you is the Holy Spirit. You are to allow the Holy Spirit to lead you. You are the light of the world, not just at church, but beyond the church walls. You must allow your star to shine brightly outward to the world, where there is darkness.
The Holy Spirit will help us shine brightly. Through His power, we are saved, filled and sealed. The Holy Spirit is the voice of wisdom. He guides our thoughts, words, decisions, and our actions. He acts like a flashlight within us. Reminding us about what God is expecting of us and how we are God's mouth, hands, and feet. Now please don't tell me that this is the church job. Let me remind you of this, YOU ARE THE CHURCH!
You are the light of the world! Go on and twinkle little star, by allowing your light to shine. LET IT SHINE!
