Moses was not only a great prophet but a song-leader as well. After three sermons, he changed the form of his message in Deuteronomy, chapter 32, to singing.
Moses wrote the words, but God is the author of these words, “Vengeance is mine, and I will repay. In due time their foot will slip; their day of disaster is near and their doom rushes upon them” (Deuteronomy 32:35).
Now in case you are saying that this is an Old Testament scripture and it doesn’t reflect the gospel of today, wait just a minute, let me share this with you. It is repeated again in the New Testament in Romans 12:19-21, “Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, 'Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord. Therefore “If your enemy hungers, feed him; if he thirsts, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
In verse 19, the phrase, “…do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath…Vengeance is mine…” Paul is saying, “Leave it to the wrath of God.” Then God goes to say, “I will repay.” God’s wrath is repayment to whoever wrongs you.
I know what you are saying, “You don’t know they did to me. They hurt me deeply and I need to give them what they deserve.” But hold on and wait a minute! You have not been squeaky clean all of your life. Remember for every finger that you are pointing at someone else, you have four more that are pointing at you. Go ahead and tell the truth and say that you are guilty as charged.
Paul quotes from Deuteronomy 32:34 to show that God has always declared His intentions to take vengeance on those who wrong others. What a declaration for justice, for us and those we care about. For everyone that has been wronged, Paul gives a warning, “Vengeance is Mine, said the Lord.” Paul wants us to know that we must trust God and God’s time table for His vengeance. Remember, His timing is not our timing, but God is always on time. We must trust God at His word and by His power to deliver whatever justice that He sees fit.
God’s thoughts are not our thoughts and His ways are not our ways. So now you maybe thinking, maybe God will show that person some mercy? Maybe or maybe not. But God shows us mercy everyday.
God is simple telling us to just trust Him to handle the revenge and the justice to all that harms us, because God says, “Vengeance is mine.”
