What’s in it for me? Is a question you would ask a person to find out: What would you gain, benefit or profit from an arrangement from participating in something.
WIIFM (What’s In It For Me?), whether verbalized, inwardly expressed, or texted, is an expression that has become increasingly popular.
This is a selfish and self-centered attitude, but it is not new. This attitude has been around since the beginning of mankind. It appears that people are so preoccupied with self and this attitude is growing faster than our national debt.
God foretold this self-centeredness as “love of self," as one of the outcomes of a world gone wild. God inspired the Apostle Paul to write to Timothy, “But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, unloving, haughty, lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God”. (2 Timothy 3:1-4)
God, our Creator, knew that mankind would be self-absorbed and it would thrive in epidemic proportions. As a Christian, when we look at the question, “WIIFM.” Titus 3:3-6 screams out, “At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.”
As a Christian, being Christ like, there is no room for MMI, Me, Myself, and I. God expects us to love others as we love ourselves, and love others as Jesus Christ loves us. God expects us to accept His Son, the Lord Jesus, as our Savior. He expects us to give our lives to Him and in so doing, develop the character of Christ. God wants us to become more like Himself.
The question WIIFM, shouldn’t exist for a true Christian. The question is always and in every situation should be “What would Jesus do?” Most importantly, we are to service others. Galatians 5:13 clearly states, “For dear brothers, you have been given freedom: not freedom to do wrong, but freedom to love and serve each other.”
What does Jesus want from you? For you to use every opportunity you have to do good for others and to serve them. He tells us that if we do something good to the least of our fellow man, it is as though we have done it to Him, personally.
As humans, we all enjoy the pleasures of life, friends, family, food, nice things, etc. But all of these things will come to an end. Our meals will be over, our jobs will come to an end, parties are short lived, and we all will eventually die. God offers us what we can experience forever, a joyful, meaningful life with Him, forever, in His kingdom.
