What is “Honesty”? Most people think that “honesty” means that you “don’t tell someone a lie” and that speaking the truth is being “honest”. Honesty is much more than that. Honesty extends to your actions and the motive behind your actions. If you hide what you did because you were trying to trick someone, that isn’t being honest. That's not being honest with yourself, others, nor God.
The adjective, honest is perfect for describing someone who tells the truth. If you are always honest, it means you are truthful and sincere no matter what. The noun honest is the quality of being honest.
Honesty is a facet of moral character that connotes positive and virtuous attributes, such as integrity, truthfulness, straightforwardness, including straightforwardness of conduct. Along with the absence of lying, cheating, theft, etc. Honesty also involves being trustworthy, loyal, fair, and sincere.
What does the Bible say about honesty? Proverbs 12:22 says, “Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are His delight.”
Honesty is truthfulness. An honest person has the habit of making accurate, trustworthy statements about life, self, others, and God.
Honesty! God expects and deserves honesty. It has been said that honesty is the best policy. What is important to know is, honesty is God’s policy.
Sometimes it isn’t easy trying to be honest. Sometimes it is tempting to lie, misrepresent a situation or ourselves, or downplay the truth. Sometimes being honest is painful. Sometimes being honest is uncomfortable. Sometimes being honest will hurt other people’s feelings.
Honesty is next to Godliness. If you want to live a life of Godly integrity, look no further, the best examples of integrity is found in God. God is the foundation of integrity. God is who He is. He told Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”, in Exodus 3:14. God is who He is and He never changes. He is blameless and eternally the same. He is perfect and just. He is the God of truth. He is righteous and upright.
So in being a person of Integrity, you always want to be honest with others, yourself, and with God. You always want to be truthful, because it will be God that holds us accountable for everything that we do. We can never be dishonest and think that God doesn’t know about it. God sees all and knows all, and nothing ever escapes Him.
Remember, “Honesty” is not only the best policy, it is the only policy because it is God’s policy.
