THE THREE D’s

So you woke up this morning and is faced with another day with Despair, Doubt, and Disappointment. You stopped to ask yourself how did these three get here? You thought that you had left them behind you last night. You thought that you had placed them in your emotional trunk and locked them away. But who greeted you this morning all droopy eyes telling dreary tales? Why of course, it was Despair, Doubt, and Disappointment. They were live and in action. They redefined what a tag-team is all about. You continue questioning yourself, how did I get here? I never should have been here. What am I doing here?

You are not alone. Many people are feeling the same way you are feeling and is questioning themselves too. In 1 Kings 19, Elijah found God asking him, “Elijah what are you doing here?”

Elijah found himself in a situation that had him in despair, doubt, and disappointment. Really? Oh yes! He was hiding in the wilderness. Are there times in your life that you wish that you can hide until everything that is going wrong can be worked out? Maybe you haven’t felt this way, but I have.

Queen Jezebel was an enemy of Elijah and she was out to harm him. Despair, doubt, and disappointment were overwhelming him, but God had a plan for Elijah. Elijah knew the power of God because he had devoted his life in proving God’s power. But there Elijah was, alone in the wilderness, hiding out and prayed that he might die. Elijah said, “I have had enough,” he told the Lord. “Take away my life, I have got to die sometime, and it might as well be now” (verse 4).

Then God asked the question, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” God proceeded to show Elijah his powers, through the windstorm, through the earthquake, and through the fire. But God wasn’t in those, He was in the sound of a gentle whisper, a “still small voice.” Then God asked him again, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Elijah poured his heart out, “I have been working very hard for the Lord God of the armies of heaven, but the people have broken their covenant and have torn down your altars; they have killed every one of your prophets except me: and now they are trying to kill me too” (verse 14). In other words, he was wandering, how did God let him get into this situation? After all he was a very dedicated soldier for God.

Have you ever given your “all in all,” only to have things turned out unexpectedly? Have you spent your life being a dedicated soldier for Christ and every time you look around you find yourself in turbulence. Maybe there was a misunderstanding or an innocent situation got out of control and people blamed you and blew it out of proportion. Those type of things will cause despair, doubt, and disappointment.

When doubt, despair, and disappointment confronts you and persist to tag along, take them to Jesus, and He will lift you up and place you in His peace, contentment, and wonder. He will transform despair, doubt, and disappointment into desire, dedication, and determination.
